What these systems actually are

A plain-language look at the low-voltage building blocks behind a connected business — so you know exactly what you are paying for.

Structured cabling

Instead of running individual cables wherever a device happens to sit, structured cabling lays out a planned, standards-based system for the whole building: horizontal runs to each work area, a backbone linking floors and rooms, and patch panels in a central rack.

Everything is terminated, tested and labeled, so when you add a desk, a camera or an access point later, the change is quick and predictable rather than guesswork.

Cat6 copper vs fiber

Cat5e and Cat6 are twisted-pair copper cables used for the runs to desks, phones, cameras and wireless access points. Cat6 is rated to a higher frequency than Cat5e and is the usual choice for new Gigabit work, with a 100-metre channel limit per run.

Fiber carries data as light rather than electrical signals. It is used for backbone links between rooms, floors or buildings, and wherever distance or electrical interference would be a problem for copper.

Power over Ethernet (PoE)

PoE delivers both data and power down a single network cable, so devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones and wireless access points do not each need a nearby power outlet. That means cleaner installs and fewer electricians on site.

Common tiers are PoE (IEEE 802.3af, up to about 15 W), PoE+ (802.3at, up to about 30 W) and PoE++ (802.3bt, up to roughly 60–100 W) for higher-draw devices.

IP cameras & access control

IP surveillance cameras connect to your network like any other device, are usually powered over the same cable via PoE, and record to a local recorder or storage so footage can be reviewed and viewed remotely.

Access control governs who can open which doors and when, using keypads, fobs or card readers. Because it lives on the same low-voltage backbone, it can be planned alongside cabling and cameras as one coherent system.

Cabling

ANSI/TIA-568

The widely used standard family for commercial building telecommunications cabling — covering structured cabling layout, performance categories and termination practices for copper and fiber.

Performance

Cat6 & the 100 m channel

Cat6 twisted-pair is rated to 250 MHz and, like other category cabling, is designed around a 100-metre channel: roughly 90 m of permanent link plus patch cords. Planning runs around that limit keeps links solid.

Power

PoE, PoE+ & PoE++

The IEEE 802.3af / 802.3at / 802.3bt standards define how power and data share one cable, at roughly 15 W, 30 W and up to 60–100 W — the backbone of modern camera, phone and access-point installs.

Interoperability

ONVIF for IP cameras

ONVIF is an open specification that helps IP cameras and recorders from different manufacturers work together, so a surveillance system is easier to expand and is not locked to a single vendor.
